Confidence Amid Temptation
Immediately after Jesusâs baptism, the Serpent appears to tempt Him. The same Serpent that deceived Adam and Eve into eating the forbidden fruit comes to tempt Jesus to eat bread, but the temptation has nothing to do with hunger and everything to do with intimacy and identity.
The Serpent finds Jesus in the wilderness and takes advantage of the opportunity. Matthew 4:3 tells us, âThe tempter came to him and said, âIf you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.ââ
Do you see what the Serpent is doing? Heâs setting the same trap that worked against Adam and Eve. A cloud of paternal mystery had remained over Jesusâs head until people heard the audible voice of God break into time and space at His baptism and call Him âmy Sonâ (Matthew 17:5). But ignoring that confirmation, the Serpent decided to try to sow doubt.
The temptation isnât about food.
The temptation is about belief.
Just like in the garden.
The Serpent says, âIf you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.â Can you hear the deception and manipulation in this question?
The Serpent attacks the most sensitive area in Jesusâs life. Heâs saying, âIf you are the Son of God, prove it.â
But by trying to prove it, Jesus would have only shown that He didnât believe the truth God had declared at His baptism. He wouldâve proven that His feelings or opinion held more weight than Godâs word.
But confidence is always silent.
Confidence feels no pressure to prove anything.
Jesus triumphed over the Serpent because He was confident in Godâs rhema. His brain had been washed.
